ROCKSHIELD | Imitation is Flattery. Until it Costs You!

Some manufacturers are selling rockshield that looks like GridGuard HD Plus or claiming their product is the same. But looking the same doesn’t mean performing the same.

If you’re paying for GridGuard, you should know what you’re getting. In Canadian winter conditions, differences in material flexibility can affect how easily rockshield handles, positions and wraps around the pipe.

That’s why we’re looking at what cold-weather testing actually tells you, and why passing a crack-resistance test doesn’t necessarily mean a product performs the same in the field.

Passing a Brittleness Test Isn’t the Same as Staying Flexible

Some competitors promote their rockshield as cold-weather ready and back it up with impressive-looking test results. But passing a cold-weather brittleness test doesn’t mean a product will be easy to handle in the field.

ASTM D2136 tests whether a material cracks or flakes when bent under specified low-temperature conditions. It does not measure how flexible the material remains, how stiff it becomes, or how easily crews can handle and wrap it around a pipe in freezing temperatures.

What matters isn’t just what a test says. It’s how the material performs when crews are actually working with it in the cold.

GridGuard HD Plus has been evaluated under actual cold-weather handling conditions. Testing demonstrated that the dry geotextile could be wrapped around an NPS 6 pipe at -50°C, while remaining easy to handle and wrap around the pipe.

Check the Back of the Rockshield. Is It Really GridGuard?

One of the easiest ways to spot the difference is to turn it over. GridGuard HD Plus has a heat-laminated, 6 oz non-woven geotextile backing. It’s a defining feature of the product, not an optional extra.

If you’re looking at a rockshield that’s being sold as GridGuard HD Plus but doesn’t have that backing, take a closer look. Similar-looking polyethylene mesh doesn’t make two products the same, and the backing is a visible way to check what you’re actually getting.

No geotextile backing? Don’t assume it’s GridGuard.

When you’re buying pipeline protection, know what you’re paying for. Check the back before it goes on your pipe.
